Last Thursday was our Firefly Music Festival preview show with some other musical treats sprinkled throughout. Missed it? Here's a recap. Our Van Days Recommended pick of the week was Shakey Graves on June 20 at Firefly and our Fast Forward pick for the future was Neutral Milk Hotel at the Mann Center in Philadelphia on July 21. The music, you ask? What about the music? Check out the full show via Spotify below:
If you weren't able to tune in last Thursday, check out the Spotify playlist from the show below. Join me this Thursday, June 5 at 9 PM on 90.7 FM WSDL or delmarvapublicradio.net for a Firefly Festival preview and music from other artists playing in our area!
This week we're featuring new music from Courtney Barnett, Painted Palms, Sharon Van Etten & Bob Mould as well as some favorite treasures from Bert Jansch, Sharon Jones, & John Doe. Come take a ride Thursday from 9 PM - 11 PM on 90.7 FM and delmarvapublicradio.net. More updates follow this handsome devil.
Ryley Walker - Van Days Recommends pick of the week or just really good at rollies?
We've got an updated concert calendar with listings through June 20; new show picks for the week and for the future; and an entirely new segment that I will hopefully name before tonight's show. In this new segment I'll take a look at one artist who's performing in the area (spoiler alert, it's Ryley Walker this week) and I'll curate a mini-set of 3 or 4 tracks that explore the lineage/heritage of that artist's musical approach - sometimes featuring bands that have been performing for 5 years and sometimes featuring bands that have been performing for 30. Or are dead.
See you tonight.
Van Days Episode 1 is in the books! Thank you to everyone who tuned in and for all of the unbelievable support poured out over the two hour broadcast and into this morning. It was a huge rush to finally air the show live and we're looking forward to keeping this rolling each and every week. If you want to check out the music from the show minus the on-air interruptions, check it out below via Spotify. Thanks again for your ears and we'll see you next week!
In about 36 hours, we'll be kicking off the first VAN DAYS live show on WSDL 90.7 FM and delmarvapublicradio.net. We're beyond excited to bring one more source of music discovery to the area - one that's not program-managed into a soulless mass of homogeny AND a program that we can all share in real time - at the same time...something that is becoming more and more difficult in a moment when we can on-demand almost everything to meet our individual schedules. What might it feel like to know we're part of discovering music and live shows together - a musical meet-up where folks from Salisbury, Easton, Lewes, Milford, Rehoboth & Milton are all listening to a new track or learning about a local show, together and for the first time? Darn awesome, I bet.
Find out for sure on Thursday from 9 - 11 PM on 90.7 FM if you're in the local listening area or delmarvapublicradio.net if you're not.
Built to Spill hit their stride right about here on May 16 at The Queen in Wilmington, DE and this guy is feeling it. Sidewalk and Strange were by far the best performance moments of the evening - the moments where it felt like the band remembered they were playing a show and totally locked in. I still love you, Built to Spill.
High points of the show - Doug Martsch gets a hug on stage and smiles, we found the best-sounding stand-spot in the whole venue & we got to say the phrase Warm Hair a bunch (referring to the opening band).
